Peña Blanca is a small village in the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes mountain range in western Guatemala. Fun fact, the town is actually called “Peña Roja” but because the bigs rocks of the town are actually white, not red, it has taken on the name “Peña Blanca”. This lot is made up of coffee from Aurelio Villatoro, and his father, Rosalio. It was processed at Aurelio’s mill, Punta del Cerro, near the town of Injerto. After being pulped, the coffee was fermented without water before being washed in long channels with water and then dried on patios for a couple weeks.
This coffee comes to us by way of a direct trade effort named “Proyecto Xinabajul”. “Xinabajul” is the ancient Mayan name for the Huehuetenango region. Traditionally, small producers in the region have been pushed up onto the ridges and steep slopes, while large processors occupy the flat valley floors where crops are more easily farmed and harvested. Smaller farmers in the higher altitudes have higher quality potential but that was never recognized. Proyecto Xinabajul looks to identify such farmers and work with them to help reach their quality potential, access markets and prices previously inaccessible to them, and bring us these lovely coffees.
